Sandy Fong Whetstone

I have art ADD.  I want to try it all.  My newest obsession is print-making, but I am primarily a ceramic sculptor.  It's a 3-D world, and I have always struggled with creating 2-D images.  If I could not wrap my hands around it, I had a hard time creating it.  I think I am making progress, however.  In addition to printing and ceramics, I have worked with acrylics, cyanotypes, interactive installations, wool fiber, lost-wax casting, bronze , welded metal sculptures, batik, sewn soft sculptures out of old sweaters, and assemblage.  I think like most artists, I have a tendency to hoard, which I battle against daily. I abhor clutter, but I look at every little bit of detritus with the potential to become part of an art project.  It is a struggle.

There are plenty of great artists out there who create magnificent works of art that challenge our ideas about the world, make us question our beliefs, our way of living, our customs and traditions, push us to think and see the world differently -- all worthy goals.  I occasionally make forays into those realms, sometimes subtly, sometimes less so; however, my primary goal is simple: I want my art to make me smile.  If it makes someone else smile, too, that's great.  There are times when I feel so oppressed by the problems of the world, the problems of everyday life, that I think the best thing I can do is bring a smile to someone, starting with me.
